Description

This species is native to China, Japan, Korea, the Ryukyu Islands and Taiwan, and commonly known as Japanese Beautyberry, it is a deciduous shrub of the mint family, which is distinguished mainly by the production of purple drupes (its “berries “) in the fall. The flowers can vary from pink to white. They are grown as ornamental trees in gardens and parks. Its name derives from the Greek kalli = “beautiful” and carpae = “fruit”. Easy to grow, the most common style is the informal vertical (Moyogi), although it adapts to many others.
