Description

Japanese garden lanterns, known as dōrō (灯籠), have a variety of classic styles that are used in Japanese gardens and temples.  Each style has its own personality and purpose in the garden, and the choice of lantern type depends on the aesthetic function, location, and symbolism desired in the Japanese garden design. This style of lantern has long legs and rises off the ground, providing a wide base that gives it stability. It’s called a “snow-seeing lantern” because, when it’s snowy, its wide hat holds the snow and creates a visually appealing scene. Their cap is wide and flat, and is usually designed to catch snow in winter. It is usually placed by water, such as on the edges of ponds or streams, and is ideal for tea gardens.
