Description

Its height is 20–35 m. The leaves are acicular, 8–12 cm long, with two for each fascicle. It is closely related to Scots pine, differing in the longer, thinner leaves that are medium green without the glaucous blue hue of Scots pine. Its distribution area includes Japan, Korea, northeast China and the extreme southeast of Russia. This pine has become a popular ornamental tree and plays an important role in the classical Japanese garden. Japanese red pine prefers full sun on slightly acidic, well-drained soils. The most common styles are the informal vertical (Moyogi) and the literati (bunjin).
