Slender tree with a generally thin trunk, with white bark that at the base cracks and darkens with age. The radical system is shallow and widespread. It blooms in late winter in the form of catkins. It prefers acidic, moist and fertile soils. Branches could die after radical pruning. The most common style is the formal upright (Chokkan) or the curved informal upright (Moyogi)
