The tree reaches a height of 12 to 15 meters. The crown, sometimes umbrella-shaped, sometimes pyramidal, is not dense. The bark is grayish brown and smooth in texture when young, and rough, fissured and dark with age. It is a semi-deciduous and long-lived tree. The leaves are large. The flowers, 4 to 5 cm, are grouped and are violet-blue. Flowering occurs in spring, before foliation, and sometimes has a second, rarer bloom in summer. The most common style is the informal upright (Moyogi) although it fits many others.
