Shrub or tree up to 8 m tall, evergreen; right trunk, grey, fibrous bark that cracks longitudinally. Phoenicea means red in Latin, perhaps alluding to the color of its fruits. Its distribution is throughout the Mediterranean area, but is considered the natural symbol of El Hierro island. The most common styles are the curved informal upright (Moyogi), clinging-to-rock (Ishizuke), windswept (Fukinagashi) and semi-cascade (Han-Kengai).
