Deciduous tree up to 30 m high. The young trunk and branches have longitudinal lines of cork-like bark. The leaves, dark green are palmed, similar to those of the maples, and turn orange, red and purple in autumn. It is a monoecious species, with male or female inflorescences that appear at the same time as the leaves. It is native to the East Coast of the United States but is grown worldwide. The most common style is the informal upright (Moyogi).
