Description
Evergreen conifer that reaches 70 m in height and 4 m in trunk diameter, with reddish-brown bark with fringes in vertical strips. It has spiral, needle-like leaves, 0.5–1 cm long; globular seed cones, 1–2 cm in diameter with about 20–40 scales. It is superficially similar to giant sequoia. Sugi is the national tree of Japan, commonly planted around temples, with many huge trees planted centuries ago. The most common style is the formal vertical (Chokkan)
