‘Okame’ is a small deciduous tree with an upright, rounded crown. It is a hybrid variety of Prunus incisa as mother and Prunus campanulata as father to create a tree that would have the deep pink to carmine red flowers of P. campanulata but without its sensitivity to cold. It has simple alternate leaves 1 to 2.5 inches long that turn bronzy red to bright orange to red in the fall in cooler parts of its range. Its reddish-brown, polished bark has prominent horizontal lenticels. Blooms profusely earlier than other prunus, its pink, 5-petaled, slightly fragrant flowers can be harmed by a late frost.
